46 days after the murder on 1122 king Road in Moscow, Idaho, the Idaho police issued a warrant and the Pennsylvania authorities made an arrest in a little town in Pennsylvania on December 30th 2022. The Man arrested was Bryan Christopher Kohberger a six foot tall, 185 pound man, and native of Pennsylvania. The alleged killer was found to have the credentials of an intelligent man. He had obtained a masters degree in criminal justice from DeSales University, a Catholic University, in Center Valley, Pennsylvania in June of 2022. Following on with his academic career he was accepted in the Doctoral program at Washington State University located in Pullman Washington. Yet, for all Mr. Kohbergers outward success he seems to have had a problem with heroin. According to a high school friend Mr. Kohberger started using heroin during his senior year in high-school. During this time Mr. Kohberger lost considerable weight and according to his high-school friend developed a destructive personality.
In light of Mr. Kohberger's arrest, his motive for being a student of criminology may not have been altruistic. Moscow, Idaho and Pullman, Washington are two major college towns within 8 miles of each other separated by a state border. Thus, in this 8 mile diameter area exist a unique market. These are two college towns with lots of youth, and with youth comes partying, and with partying comes alcohol, drugs, and prostitution. All statistics point to a raise in opioid use to include heroin, fentanyl , and heroin laced fentanyl, in the area. The drug problem pushed Moscow, Idaho police chief to request funding for a drug dog from the city council in July of 2021, and the Moscow police got their first drug dog in June of 2022. The dog is a white Labrador retriever from the Netherlands named Ragner. he had interest in assisting rural law enforcement agencies with how to better collect and analyze technological data in public safety operations .
Maybe he wanted to get into the police confidential data base to see what he could find?
If the accused is the killer, was this his first time killing? It seems highly unlikely that a person who had never killed another human being before would stake out an apartment house with 5 people and lots of pedestrian traffic to engage in a close quarters stabbing. That is a fordable task, for even the most seasoned combat soldier or drug cartel sacario. According to the Moscow PD Probable Cause Affidavit,
Mr Kohberger's car was seen moving eastbound on King road at 4:04 am on the 13th of November 2022, which is the morning of the murders. This is just after Xena Kernodle received a door dash delivery at 4:00 am. The vehicle is seen departing the area at 4:20 am on the same morning. So, 16 minutes elapse between entry and departure. However, when the vehicle arrives at 4:04 am the driver engages in a few maneuvers before exiting, to include, turning around, unsuccessfully trying to park, then engaging in a three point turn. All this jockeying around takes time. Plus, the assailant must then negotiate ingress into an unfamiliar building and maneuver up stairs, pass the D.M. door for the first time, to the third floor where it is assumed the first assault begins. There are 16 minutes between the driver being in the left front car seat on entry and on exit. Quite a few minutes are wasted from the point of initial appearance into the neighborhood, then maneuvering the vehicle, and exiting the vehicle, then entry into the third floor bedroom. Now, once he is in the third floor bedroom he must engage not one person but two people. In addition, we are not certain Goncalves was in the Mogen room during the initial assault. Does anyone scream? D.M. doesn't report hearing screams. No screaming would not indicate torso wounds only or the victims were drugged. At this time Xena Kernodle is actively engaged on tik tok in the bedroom below the Goncalves room, and the dog (Murphy)is in the room above the kernodle room, which is the Goncalves room, and is barking. D.M. opens her door for the first time because she thinks Kaylee is playing with her dog. D.M. believes she opens the door closer to 4:00 am. However, Mr. Kohberger is still in his car and if acting alone doesn't get to the house until closer to 4:12 am. The D. M. door is at the bottom of the stairwell leading down from the third floor. The killer must pass this door to get to the third floor and the Kernodle room. After the third floor assault , the assailant must move downstairs through the house to the kernodle bedroom, passing the D.M. door , for a second time, which is directly below the Goncalves bedroom. In the Probable Cause Affidavit D.M. only mentions one person passing her door one time and that was the exit of the killer from the Kernodle room. Was there a second assailant on the third floor? Lastly, the assailant engages two more people one of whom is still awake and the other who is a large young male. During this engagement it is reported by D. M. the killer has a short conversation with Xana while she is crying, which is very callous indeed. In short, the methodical execution of the assault which may have occurred in less than seven or eighth minutes, and coupled with the reported callousness of the assailant, doesn't point to a first time killer nor a single assailant.
Upon Reviewing the floor plan of the home
The DNA evidence is not solid. The Knife sheath does not 100% place Mr. Kohberger in the mogen room. If Mr. Kohberger had a sheathed knife he most likely would have had it connected to his belt. Remember, Mr. Kohberger is preparing to stab to death four to six people in a six person house. Would he wait and remove the knife from the sheath once in the bedroom? No, He would a least had the knife ready once safely on the third floor, and the sheave would have been secured to his belt. However, he could have given the knife/sheave combo to a second person who removed the knife from the sheave which then left the sheath unattached. Thus, in the struggle the sheath is left behind. Do the authorizes have additional DNA or other evidence of Mr. Kohberger in the mogen room or kernodle room?
The surviving witness on the second floor saw a man with bushy eyebrows leave the building. Thus, The lighting conditions were adequate to discern some detail, So, the killer is not operating in total black out conditions. Why does the killer pass this room three times without entering, and on the last time the door is open and the occupant is standing in the door looking at the killer walk down the hall from the kernodle room and exit the property. What inspired the killer to leave this girl alone? was the killer operating under some type of time constraint? or were these four on some type of hit list? Did the surviving eye witness hear the killer transit down the stairs? Because the house was a party house with a history of unknown people entering and exiting at all hours of the night, alcohol consumption, the activity of someone moving about may not have alerted the young college freshman. Certainly the sound of Kenodle crying and then quit would have registered distress, or the distress could have been dismissed thinking kernodle had been given drugs. The actions of the surviving roommate beyond this point are grounds for thought. Because the surviving roommate survived when the killer was within arms distance, would suggest the attacker had some type of objective.
The gag order by the presiding judge raises some eyebrows. The gag order comes close to the time the toxicology report on the victims should have been returned. Could they have been drugged earlier in the night? The Moscow, Idaho police Probable Cause Affidavit has opened up a plethora of question that may never be answered.
